The English Cream Golden Retriever is an excellent choice for a family pet, and though a sporting breed, it is one of the finest choices you can make for your family. A Golden can be all things to many people, from fulfilling its original role as a shooting field dog, to service dog, search-and-rescue, guide dog, hearing dog for the deaf, and a working dog for police and customs.
ACITIVITY LEVEL
Golden Retrievers are highly active, enthusiastic dogs. Time spent indoors with people should be complemented with time outdoors on daily adventures. Exercise can initially start in a yard for a puppy. Start with 10-15 minutes of off-the-lead play. Exercise can be increased as the puppy grows, but very gradually. Remember your puppy is growing at an alarming rate and over-exercise and too boisterous play can cause damage to joints and cartilage later in life.
INTELLIGENCE
Golden Retrievers are exceptionally intelligent. They are considered by many to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds. Since they are so intelligent, they are easily trained and very obedient. Once trained, they will work diligently for you. They make exceptional family dogs and fantastic gun dogs.
SIZE
Both sexes of the Golden Retrievers are fairly close in size. The male dogs are approximately 23 or 24 inches tall and weigh 65-80 pounds. The female dogs are between 21 1/2 and 22 1/2 inches tall and weigh between 60 and 70 pounds.
COLOR
The Golden Retriever's color is remarkable and unforgettable. They range from a very lustrous gold to a very light cream. The English bloodlines are well known for a color that is second to none!
TEMPERAMENT
The Golden is a friendly, reliable, trustworthy, persevering dog. They make above average family pets because they do not have any aggressive tendencies, making them not the best watchdogs, but they are the dog everyone in the neighborhood loves and isn't fearful of around their families.
LIFESPAN
Regular vet care and proper nutrition are vital to maintaining your dog's health. With that and some extra love you can plan on having 10 to 15 years of faithful companionship with your Golden.
BREED STANDARD
The animal must be symmetrical, powerful, active, and well put together. Broad in skull, muzzle straight, eyes friendly, ears short, nose black or brownish black, backline strong and level, well-balanced, and the tail well set on, thick, and muscular. The color is rich, lustrous golden, of various shades from cream to almost red. The dog must have a reliable, friendly, and trustworthy temperament.
